Barnet Sports Centre, Barnet
New community sports centre is broken down into three connected volumes to integrate into sensitive landscape.
A new five court community sports centre for the popular Maccabi London Brady sports club on a green belt site in north London.
The location demanded a sensitive approach to both massing and façade design, to house a multi-use facility with courts for futsal, netball and badminton.
Following rigorous analysis of Sport England’s codes, we devised a building with three connected volumes to create a logical internal layout including viewing gallery and terrace.
The external skin responds to the landscape with vertical timber slats interspersed with reflective metal fins to draw light and animation into the façade.
‘Don’t underestimate how hard it is to get planning officer sign off for green belt development. London Borough of Barnet loved this scheme – they saw the architectural merit in Fathom’s work. As with all good design it’s not even expensive to build.’
