A tree-inspired community pavilion within Elephant Park, forming a civic centrepiece for the South London neighbourhood.

Fathom were invited by Lendlease to submit ideas for a pavilion within Elephant Park, forming a cultural and community centrepiece for the South London neighbourhood. The brief sought a structure which would have relevance for a cross section of the community, from children and teenagers to the elderly, establish connections with nature and have the capacity to host events and performances.

Our design is centred on an appreciation of the existing mature trees within the park and the symbol of new life, expressed with an undulating triangular concrete form defining internal and external spaces and providing the structure for several seed-like containers from which trees emerge as suspended objects.  The spectacle creates a sense of tension, delight and excitement and creates a focal point for the pavilion and the public routes which surround it.
